This is the README file for PrintEnv 1.0.

I've always thought that it was strange that you can compose
and print a standard business letter with your Newton, but when
it comes time to create the envelope, you are left with no way
to print in landscape (sideways) printer mode. Thus you have to
hand write the envelope (ugh). PrintEnv addresses this problem.
As you will see, it simply displays a small window in which you
write the name and address of the person receiving the letter,
and prints a standard business envelope when you tap "Print".

What is in this ZIP file:
README.TXT This file
PRINTENV.PKG PrintEnv 1.0
RUNTIME.PKG NS Basic runtime file for NOS 2.0 (required)

How to use PrintEnv:

When you want to print an envelope, connect the serial cable
that came with your Newton to the printer and run PrintEnv. To
write in the name, address, etc, just tap on the appropriate
box and a slip will open to allow you to write in the
information. Close the slip and what you just wrote appears on
the envelope. When you are ready, tap "Print".

What you should know:

* PrintEnv sends characters to your printer DIRECTLY through
the serial port. As a result:
       1. PrintEnv does not use the OutBox. Make sure your
printer is ready to produce an envelope through the manual
feed slot when you tap "Print".
      2. PrintEnv MUST have a SERIAL Newton <-> printer
connection. It will NOT work with the Apple Print Pack, and it
will NOT work through a parallel interface. Use the cable that
you use with NBU to connect to the printer.
      3. PrintEnv ONLY works with Hewlett-Packard printers and
those printers able to emulate HPIIP mode (i.e. the OkiData
400e). Sorry PostScript printer users, but we (the Newton
community) should bug Apple to make landscape printing more
easily available so that programs like this aren't necessary.

* PrintEnv is written in NS Basic. I have included the required
runtime.pkg file, which you should install with PrinEnv.pkg.
(The idea is similar to Microsoft's Visual Basic - you need the
runtime file, but you only have to install it on your Newton
once.) This runtime file requires NOS 2.0. If you have a
package freeze utility, you can freeze it and PrintEnv to
conserve heap, just unfreeze both before you run PrintEnv.

* If you are a Mac user, in order for PrintEnv to install from
NBU you should open the PrintEnv.pkg file in ResEdit. Say "Yes"
when it asks if you want to create a resource fork. Open the
File...Get Info dialog box and change the TYPE to "pkg "
(include the space) and change the CREATOR to "pkgX". Save
PrintEnv.pkg and quit ResEdit. If you are a Windows user, send
Bill Gates an e-mail saying how glad you are you don't have to
deal with this.

* PrintEnv is 1996 Timothy C. Hodges. All rights reserved.

* PrintEnv is freeware. You can distribute it freely as long as
you include the runtime module and this README file.

* PrintEnv has had no beta testing (except by me) and there
will probably be no upgrades or tech support.

* Thanks to George Henne and Steve Weyer for their help.

Enjoy!
